Rosmah in the dark over Najib's royal pardon bid

KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor says she is in the dark over her husband Datuk Seri Najib Razak's bid for a royal pardon.

"I do not know as I am not involved with it," she told reporters when asked during the Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (June 10).

In July 2020, the former prime minister Najib was convicted and sentenced for charges involving criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering and abuse of position involving SRC funds totalling RM42mil.

He was sentenced to a RM210mil fine and a 12-year jail term, of which he is currently serving at the Sungai Buloh prison.

In August 2022, the Federal Court dismissed Najib’s appeal to quash his conviction, leaving only a royal pardon as his last avenue for freedom.

On May 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who sits on the Pardons Board, said that Najib's appeal for a pardon was not brought up for discussion during the board's meeting in late April.

Anwar said that Najib's appeal would be given due and fair consideration when it comes before the board.

The board is slated to meet again this coming October.

In April, the Umno supreme council unanimously agreed to seek an audience with the King to present a memorandum urging Najib be pardoned.

Meanwhile, Rosmah said that Najib did not want to speak to her about matters regarding Umno during a recent visit.

"He always talks to Yana (Nooryana Najwa) and I am just an observer," she said.

Nooryana Najwa, who was elected as an Umno Puteri exco member in March, took part in debates on the presidential address at the Umno assembly here.

Meanwhile, Rosmah thanked Umno members for their support and their calls for Najib's release.

On Friday (June 9), several Umno members were seen carrying posters of Najib with the words "Justice for Najib Razak" including Umno Bangi division chief Datuk Dr Mohd Zaidi Zain calling for Najib's early release during his debate.
